My Google Story – #MyGoogleZA

It’s hard to think of one specific moment when Google has made a big difference to my life, because honestly Google plays a part in my life almost every single day. When I’m planning a holiday I spend hours Googling tourist attractions, transport options, and hotel accommodations. I use it to give me up to date exchange rates, just by searching “convert Rands to Dollars/Pounds,etc” and Google Maps was my lifeline when I first moved to Johannesburg and had literally no idea where I was all the time. In all honesty, I would say that Google Maps is probably the most used app on my phone, even more than my social media apps! I hate getting lost (even though it happens all the time) so even if I’m in a taxi or driving with a friend, I usually have Google Maps open and the route planned out. My life would certainly be a lot harder if I didn’t have the option to use Google to prep for my shows during the week – as it is I spend hours finding new music online, and without it I would be lost and definitely wouldn’t be able to research the best music for my show.

I do have one specific story to share when Google (and their apps) literally saved my skin. When you think of Brazil, what’s the first thing that spring to mind? Probably football, or beautiful beaches, bikini clad women with perfect bodies… which is fair i suppose, but honestly, if you don’t speak Portuguese (or Spanish which seems to be their most known second language) then you probably won’t be able to find any of those things. I’ve traveled to places like China and Hong Kong, and in all seriousness, the language barrier in Brazil is way more of a hindrance. In cities like Sao Paulo, Fortaleza, Belo Horizonte, and Manaus you could go days without anyone being able to speak or understand even the minutest amount of English. Joe and I traveled Brazil during the World Cup for a month, and without Google Translate we wouldn’t have been able to tell the taxi drivers where we needed to go, or ask the pharmacist for headache tablets, or even order off of the menus in restaurants.

Thanks to Google Translate, whenever I needed to ask something that hand gestures just couldn’t get across, I’d whip out my phone and just use Google Translate. The best part was that I would type the English in and translate it to Portuguese, but then I’d just switch it around, hand them the phone and they could type in Portuguese and translate it to English for me to understand. I even had a few locals asking me what app I was using because tourists would stop them all the time and try and speak to them, but they had no way of communicating. As a result of the app I felt like I could actually genuinely connect with more people because we were able to go beyond the “where *makes wild hand gestures* toilet?” questions you might ask when traveling in a country where English isn’t even the fourth language. I had some fully fledged conversations via that little app on my phone, and we always parted ways with smiles on our faces. I remember there was a day in Sao Paulo where my phone died, and we tried to get around without the help of the app, and it was significantly more testing. I had to resort to pointing at pictures in a booklet to try and ask the taxi driver to take us to Beco do Batman (yes, that’s actually its name… no it isn’t pronounced Batman like the superhero).

Today I’ve collaborated with Google to bring you an EPIC hamper to the value of over R5000! But to be honest, you can’t actually buy most of these things, they’re exclusive Google swag. All you need to do is share your Google story on social media (Twitter/Insta/FB) and you could win :) Tell me about the time Google Maps helped you avoid the traffic and you made your crucial meeting just in time, maybe you found your wedding dress via Google Search, or maybe like me Google Translate helped you out of a sticky situation? Don’t forget to tag me in your story and use the hashtag: #MyGoogleZA – you need to do this in order for your entry to be counted.

What’s in the hamper:

  • Sony Xperia device
  • R250-00 Google Play Vouchers
  • Google Cardboard <<< this is amazing
  • Selfie Stick
  • Power banks
  • Google Headphones
  • iKnow Board Game

Just a quick FYI – I’ve recently downloaded Google Calendar too… and I’m hoping it’ll help with productivity and keeping all my events/appointments/meetings/travel in a row. So far it’s super easy to use and nice to look at too :P Thought it was worth mentioning in case you’re looking for something better than the native calendar app on iPhone/Android.

CONGRATS to Gary B Laight for winning the competition! His entry was received via Facebook, and he perfectly described how Google has become an essential part of his everyday life!

Clarkson, Hammond & May LIVE – Win with KIA On Tour!

Twitter_ClarksonHammondMay_KIA on Tour.jpg

If you follow me on social media, or even know me in real life, you should already know that i have a serious problem when it comes to Top Gear [Clarkson, May & Hammond]. I think i’ve watched every single episode they’ve ever done together more than 7 times each… which might not sound like a lot, but when you consider how many seasons/episodes have been made, that’s a lot of any one thing to watch. I’m not alone in this though, my parents are also equally enamored by these guys. My mom has quite a few DVD box sets and puts Top Gear on whenever there isn’t anything on tv, which is a lot of the time. My dad used to race, so he’s been a proper petrol head for more than 40yrs already, and he loves the combination of banter and car talk.

I don’t want to talk too much about Clarkson’s exit from Top Gear, and Hammond & May following him, because honestly it makes me unbelievably sad and upset.

The good news is that the guys will be in Johannesburg from 12 – 14 June, and if you’ve never seen them live – you are definitely missing out. The good people over at Kia have got a pretty awesome competition going where you could win a set of tickets to the show just by pre-registering for a test-drive! The test drives are happening at the actual event too… so it is super convenient.

I’ve been driving the Kia Soul for the past couple of weeks, and i must say that any sort of pre-conceived ideas i had about Kia were completely pushed aside as soon as i got into the car. This isn’t just lip-service, i genuinely love the car… everything about it suits my lifestyle. I’ve also had a chance to drive the KIa Koup which is just insane, incredibly fast!

HOW TO WIN

Click on this link: Clarkson, Hammond & May LIVE Test Drive and you could win yourself 2 tickets to see them live! AND if you want, test drive one of Kia’s awesome cars that will be on show… what better place to do it than at an entire event dedicated to the awesomeness of cars? :)

Nelson Mandela Legacy Cup – Competition

mandel legacy cup

I’ll be the first to admit that i’m not a massive follower of either cricket or rugby – but i’m obviously fiercely patriotic and will always support our boys in green. No matter the sport!

It hink it’s pretty hilarious/genius that the rugby team is willing to hang its pride up and play a completely different sport against guys who are paid to play for a living. It’s worth mentioning though, that i would pay a significant amount of money to see the cricket team play  rugby against the Springboks!

This T20 game – The Nelson Mandela Legacy Cup – is a celebration of Madiba’s legacy the best way South Africans know how…through sport. Something which Madiba was adamant about using to unite our very broken country.

Most of the household names will be there, led by their respective captains: AB and Jean de Villiers. A signing session with selected members of both teams will also take place as well as the popular Hit-a-Six competition.

It takes place on the 5th of December at Bidvest Wanderers. Tickets for the match are available from www.ticketpro.co.za and range from R90-R200. The fun starts at 3pm and the game is at 6.30pm.

I have got 4 tickets to the Nelson Mandela Legacy Cup to give away. All you have to do is include ALL of the following THREE elements in a tweet:

1.) Details: http://goo.gl/3OFRBC

2.) @StephanieBe

3.) Nelson Mandela Legacy Cup

For example: “Hey @StephanieBe! I’d love those 4 tickets to the Nelson Mandela Legacy Cup. Details: http://goo.gl/3OFRBC “

Winner announced Tuesday the 2nd of December.

Get Some Brand New Kicks With Shelflife!

Shelflife

If you follow me on Twitter and/or Instagram then you’ll know how much I love my trainers. I would wear crappy clothes for the rest of my life if it meant I could rock the latest pair of Air Max every day, but let’s be honest, our wallets don’t always agree.

Shelflife, I’m sure, don’t need any introduction. They’re the best place to go to if you want the most recent releases in South Africa, whether it’s Nike, Adidas or whoever that tickles your fancy. It’s no coincidence that Kendrick Lamar and Chris Brown have stopped in not so long ago. Continue Reading

Win Windhoek! Whoop!

As you guys may, or may not know, I like beer. Like a lot. I drink quite a bit of it in my social time and would say that it’s one of my favourite pastimes… Especially if there’s a game on.

When I moved to South Africa I made a point of trying all the local beers, and while Windhoek isn’t local to SA so to speak, it is African, and it’s a beer that I actually really liked.

So, when I was asked to offer you guys (my lovely followers) the chance to win some free Windhoek, I naturally jumped at the chance!

Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair – Competition

The FoodWineDesign Fair was launched in 2010 by Artlogic and Sanlam Investments. The first of its kind in South Africa, it’s described as a “boutique outdoor market” and features the best local furniture crafters, artisan products, top wine labels, micro breweries and speciality foods.

If it’s important to you to eat the best local foods, taste South African boutique wines and decorating your home with the works of South African designers and artists. – then this is the place for you. The Chefs in the City project will see David Higgs, Michael Holenstein and Thom Hughes each take the stand for one day to treat visitors to their creations.

This year’s event will take place from 7-9 November on the rooftop of the Hyde Park Corner shopping centre. I’ve been told that they’ve gone to every effort to turn it into a magical setting with tented areas, theatre lighting, inspired dining and retailing areas, and larger than life landscaping.

With the Fair being the first event of its kind to combine elements from food, wine and design industries, Sanlam believes that the positive change and shift in direction will result in the growth of even more proudly South African entrepreneurs.

As “local” and “well-made” are an integral part of the Fair, and much like the exhibitors are experts in their chosen field, Sanlam is the expert in investments and understands the importance of being able to offer a superior product.  Sanlam also has a huge respect for the extraordinary amount of time, planning and sheer determination it takes to turn a dream into a sustainable business despite economic business challenges.

Tickets are available for R90 from Webtickets, or R100 at the door. Uber have also gotten on board this year, and first time subscribers can use the promo code Handmade to receive R200 off their first ride. What’s more, anyone arriving in an Uber can show their receipt at the door and receive a R10 discount off the Fair ticket price, plus you’ll stand the chance to win Uber credit.

This info is just a taste of what’s to come over the weekend of 7-9 November. For more info please visit www.foodwinedesign.co.za, email info@artlogic.co.za or phone 011-447-3868.

/// COMPETITION TIME \\\

I am fortunate enough to have 1 double ticket to give away, as well as R500 worth of product from the fair! So if good food, design and wine is your thing, get tweeting! Obviously, the fair is happening in JHB, so the prize does not include flights or accommodation.

Rekorderlig South Africa – Competition

I had my first taste of Rekorderlig about 2 and a half years ago in the UK. They have a crazy range of ciders available to them in Europe, but Rekorderlig seems to come out on top. The boyfriend’s mom even made sure she bought some for me the last time we visited a few months ago. We ended up trying to bring a couple of bottles back into the country, but they got smashed inside our luggage at OR Tambo.

Reklig

The good news is that i don’t have to worry about sketchy transportation and having to ration two 500ml bottles out over the course of a year – because Rekorderlig is now in SA! If you’ve never been a cider person, i would challenge you to trying this specific cider out. The three flavours that have been brought to SA are the 3 staples in their range, and each of them tastes like heaven: Strawberry-Lime, Wild Berries and Pear!

Rekorderlig is still brewed in the small Southern Swedish village of Vimmerby, and made from natural ingredients – no syrups are used! You might also be wondering why Rekorderlig comes in 500mL glass bottles? Was it a carefully crafted ploy? Was it a huge amount of research that pointed to it? Neither! The reason is simple, Rekorderlig was first served in a 500mL bottle due to the Swedish recycling restrictions. All Cider was served in 500mL bottle to aid in the government’s commitment to create a green Sweden. Which is pretty sweet!
